On 22 April and 22 May 2026, the CR202 Project (Obayashi Singapore Pte Ltd – Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) Joint Venture) welcomed students from the Raffles Archives and Museum Club of Raffles Institution to its Biodiversity Training Centre.
During the 2.5-hour sessions, the project’s Environmental Officer, Mr Kelvin Poh, provided an in-depth introduction to the project, which mainly involves the construction of a 5 km bored tunnel for the Cross Island Line connecting the future Turf City Station and Bright Hill MRT Station. Students learned about the engineering challenges of large-scale tunnelling works, as well as the environmental considerations involved in delivering infrastructure projects within sensitive ecological areas.
Based on feedback gathered after the visits, students were fascinated by the complexity of tunnel construction, including the extensive planning, calculations, and reinforcement measures required to safeguard surrounding structures. Many were equally surprised to learn about the comprehensive environmental protection measures implemented on the project. These include initiatives to minimise noise and light pollution, as well as ongoing monitoring of local flora and fauna to reduce the project’s impact on the surrounding ecosystem and maintain ecological balance throughout the construction phase.
Obayashi is pleased to share the technologies and innovations adopted in the project, and at the same time hopes to highlight that environmental stewardship remains a key priority for the project team. We are encouraged that this message resonated with the students and contributed to the main objective of the Biodiversity Training Centre — to raise awareness of the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation.
We look forward to welcoming more students in future sessions and continuing to provide opportunities for young minds to learn about sustainable construction practices.
