As Gold Sponsor of the NUS Built Environment Case Competition (BECC) 2026, Obayashi Singapore was proud to support NUS students in addressing real-world challenges within the built environment sector — and we couldn’t be prouder of the results!
Held on 15 August at Bridge+ @ Geneo, six finalist teams presented their proposals to a panel of industry judges, including our own Assistant Construction Manager, Toh Ming Tong. Behind the scenes, our engineers Sebal Oo and Tan Zi Ling mentored two teams over several weeks of ideation, refinement, and problem-solving.
The results speak for themselves — both mentored teams clinched the top spots:
🥇Team YIH Caifan — 1st Place
Their solution, Lumipath, reimagines pedestrian crossings using mmWave radar sensors and ground-level LED tiles to warn pedestrians of approaching vehicles, directly addressing the sharp rise in accidents involving elderly pedestrians at uncontrolled crossings.
🥈 Team dRose — 1st Runner-Up
Their proposal, Living Linkways, retrofits existing sheltered walkways with cooling nodes and modular planters, transforming everyday transit routes into greener, more inclusive spaces for commuters of all ages.
Both projects impressed the judges with their technical feasibility, financial rigour, and genuine consideration for the people who would use these solutions every day — a mindset we deeply value in our own work.
Congratulations to both teams on this outstanding achievement, and our sincere appreciation to NUS BECC Committee for organising a platform that bridges the gap between classroom learning and industry practice. It’s heartening to see the next generation of built environment leaders bring this level of creativity to real industry challenges.
